Internet marketing can encompass many different methods and techniques. People are constantly coming up with new ways to get offers in front of potential customers. I want to discuss some of the things you will want to take into consideration when first learning internet marketing.
Internet Marketing Newbies
Marketing is all about developing a strategy to produce a desired outcome. The desired outcome of most internet marketing campaigns includes several or all of the following:
- Building Brand Awareness (Website awareness)
- Promoting Appropriate Products/Services To Their Visitors
- Promoting Products They Have Created
- Building An Email List
- Gaining Subscribers
These are not the only goals of an internet marketing campaign, but they are some of the more obvious ones.
For internet marketing newbies, I always suggest you learn affiliate marketing to start with. Affiliate marketing is by no means the only method of internet marketing. However, once you learn affiliate marketing basics, you will have developed the skills needed for the more advanced techniques.
Every successful affiliate marketer I know started here.
Are You Building A Brand Or Just A Website?
For years I had assumed that in order to build a brand, you had to develop your own product. This is not necessarily the case. If you build a website with a memorable domain name and fill it with content that people enjoy enough to return to your site, you can easily build your own brand regardless of who’s products you promote.
Exact Match Domains
Not everybody wants to build a brand and that’s fine. Some people choose EMD’s (exact match domains) and focus more on the particular niche they are planning to market for. One is not better (or easier to build) than the other. It all depends on your specific goals as an internet marketer.
An example of an exact match domain would be to take a keyword phrase that you found through your keyword research and buy that exact domain name followed by .com, .org or .net. Although many other domain extensions are available besides those 3, I wouldn’t suggest buying them. They can take much more work to rank for.
Does Your Website Add Value?
Anyone can create content but creating content that adds value to people’s lives is what internet business are built on. Most decisions to buy online are emotional decisions. There are several different emotional triggers but the two triggers that are most likely to lead to sales are products that help people:
- Gain Pleasure
- Avoid Pain
I am not necessarily talking about pleasure or pain in a physical sense.
People spend millions annually on e-books that teach them how to do something that greatly improves their lives or situations. Here’s another example; I love to buy books. What I don’t love is paying $20 for a new book at one of those super stores. When I found a website where I could buy quality used books at a fraction of the price, I was quite happy.
The same applies to avoiding pain. People love their dogs but can find themselves at their wits end when their beloved pet destroys furniture or urinates all over the place. This is why dog training is a multi, multi-million dollar a year industry online.
In a nutshell, internet marketing is about:
- Uncovering A Desire Or Need To Solve A Problem
- Finding Out How People Look For Solutions
- Leading Them To The Best Possible Solution
How Will People Find YOU?
You can offer the best thing since sliced bread but if people don’t know your site exists, you can’t help them. This is where keyword research comes in. A keyword phrase is what people type into a search bar to look for information.
Above is a keyword phrase that I have targeted for this site (obviously). My keyword research shows me that this keyword phrase gets a good amount of monthly traffic and the competition is not insurmountable. Monthly traffic and competition are the two most important metrics to pay attention to.
I have previously written an article demonstrating how I use keyword research tools to find great keyword phrases. You can access it here. (Will open in a new window)
Article marketing was a very popular method of internet marketing several years ago. People would publish articles within article directories like ezinearticles.com or goarticles.com as well as several popular web 2.0 sites like squidoo.com or hubpages.com.
Article marketing provided three major benefits:
- Direct Traffic To Your Site
- Affiliate Offers Within Your Content
Due to changes over the last few years, article marketing is not as effective or advantageous as it once was. Some article directories no longer allow affiliate links and backlinks no longer have the clout they once had. The only real benefit to be gained by article marketing is driving traffic directly to your site.
Personally, I don’t bother with article marketing anymore. I believe you’re better off publishing content on your own site. Sometimes, a single article can show up in search engines for dozens of keyword variations. I think of a website as virtual real estate, and if I’m going to build an addition, I’d rather build it on MY property rather than someone else’s.
How To Find Products To Promote On Your Site
There are tons of affiliate programs out there for almost any niche. You can do a Google search for affiliate programs by typing the name of the product followed by + affiliates. I’ll show you an example.
Almost every result on the first page has an affiliate program for wine fridges. And there is page after page of these offers! Some of the sites in this particular example cater to wine enthusiasts which means you can offer many different products within that niche.
An affiliate network is a company that centralizes the affiliate programs for many different companies or digital product creators. One of the more popular affiliate networks for digital products is Clickbank. (Learn more on my Make Money With Clickbank page).
Again, you can do a Google search for affiliate networks and find plenty to choose from. Some of them can be a bit “picky” about who they accept. Rejection is not final however. It usually means your site doesn’t have enough “authority” yet. Adding new posts and pages to your site will greatly improve your chances of being accepted in the future.
Designing Your Website
I’m not going to lie to you here, website design can be frustrating to point of wanting to pull your own hair out! I see people struggle with it on a daily basis. It’s not too difficult to do but there is a learning curve. Once you understand the elements that go into a great looking site, you will automatically develop good habits that will make web design seem like second nature to you.
I will be covering several different aspects of web design here that you can access within Categories in the sidebar to the right. If you have a particular question about web design, or anything within this article, please leave it in the comment box below.
