OK, we’ve got a lot to cover here so let’s get started.
Here’s What We’ll Be Covering
- Choosing A Niche
- Keyword Research
- Choosing A Domain Name
- Setting Up Your Site
- Finding Affiliate Programs (Products to sell)
You may have noticed that I listed “finding affiliate programs” last. That is usually the #1 reason people want to build a website in the first place. The problem is, if you focus too much on that aspect of your site in the early stages, it will often lead to failure.
Finding Your Niche
A niche, by its’ simplest definition, is a group of people looking for stuff. Where there are people looking for stuff, there are companies with stuff needing to sell it someone. Your job as an affiliate marketer is to bring the two together and earn a commission in the process.
There are so many potential niches out there, I couldn’t possibly begin to list even a fraction of them! Hobbies, passions, electronic gadgets, how to’s , the list goes on and on……
Most purchases made online are motivated by 1 of 2 things, (a) to gain pleasure or (b) to avoid pain. If you can help someone solve their problem or find something they’re looking for, you have a much better chance of making sales.

Keyword Research And Analysis
Keywords can be a bit confusing to people just getting started with affiliate marketing. (I know they were for me.) Keywords are the search terms people use when looking for information. Search engines, like Google, collect information on how often certain phrases are used and how many pages they have indexed to provide that information.
The key to making a lot of sales is to get a lot of traffic to your website. If you want the search engines to sends lots of free traffic to your site, you’ll want to learn how to find great keyword phrases. I’m going to show you how I find great keyword phrases and later, I’ll show you how you can get 60 free searches with these premium keyword research tools.
While playing around with keyword phrases, for the purpose of this demonstration, I stumble across a decent niche idea. Here’s what I did:
In the Google search bar I typed “how to sell” and Google suggested the words “stuff on ebay”. So I took the phrase “how to sell stuff on ebay” and plugged it into my keyword tool. This is what I found:
(This is just 4 of 50+ results I got from my search.)
Then, under “Competition” I clicked View Results. This is what found next:
3,439 monthly searches and only 172 competing pages! Under 300 is considered generally good, but under 200 is great! Now we just need to find about 30 of these. It may sound like a lot but keep in mind, every keyword phrase can mean a lot of money in your pocket!
Each keyword phrase will be use as the titles for your post’s or pages. For example, the title of the page you’re reading right now is: Affiliate Marketing For Beginners. That is the keyword phrase I was trying to target with this page.
Choosing A Domain Name
Normally, when building a niche site, it helps if you can find a domain name that matches one of your keyword phrases. In this case however, you probably can’t use ebay within your domain name. What we can do is find a name with the word “sell” in it.
I came up with a few off the top of my head and did a search in namecheap. The following domains were available:
If I spent a little time, I’m sure I could easily find dozens of available “selling” domain names. You may have noticed I only looked for names with the extension .com .org and .net. These are the only 3 you want to use (In the U.S.) in that order. A domain name will run you about $12 a year. Hosting is a little under $10 per month.

Setting Up Your Website
If you’re a beginner when it comes to building websites, you will probably want to use WordPress as your content management system. WordPress is pretty easy to use once you get used to working with it. There are tons of Youtube video’s available to show you how to do almost anything you can imagine.
Show Me The Money! – Finding Affiliate Programs
There are tons of affiliate programs out there for almost any niche. As long as it’s legal to sell online, chances are there is an affiliate program for it. For the example I’ve been using up to this point, we’ll look at Clickbank to see what they have for affiliate products in the “selling on ebay” niche.
You can see that in the Find Products section, I typed ebay. You can see 2 of dozens of available ebay courses you can promote on your site. Clickbank has a simple application process and once you’re in, you’ll have access to thousands of products you can promote to dozens (maybe hundreds) of niches.
