How do you make money with affiliate marketing?

Many companies have affiliate programs setup to offer their products or services. By applying to these affiliate programs, you will be given an affiliate link exclusively assigned to you. When someone visits their site through your affiliate link, you will earn a commission based on the sale of the products or services offered by that company.

Do I need a website?

Technically, no. There are other methods of sending people to affiliate offers but, they are usually somewhat advanced techniques. These advanced techniques are much easier to grasp once you have an understanding of how websites work.

How long does it take to start making money?

There are way too many variables to answer this question with any kind of honesty. You should be mentally prepared to work six months to a year to start seeing results. It may not take that long, but you should be willing to work for months with no results.

How much time should I spend working on my site?

This is different for everybody. You should try to publish a minimum of one post/page per week. Even if you can’t finish an article in one sitting, you can always save your work as a draft and finish it later.

How will I get paid?

Any affiliate program you join will have very specific details about pay. It will most likely be a certain day of the month. Some will mail you a check while others will only use PayPal.

What should I sell?

You should sell products/services that are best tailored to the needs of your visitors. In other words, rather than focusing on what you’re going to sell, focus on the needs of the people within your chosen niche.

Where do I find products to promote?

The simplest way is by doing a Google search for the kind of product you want to promote, followed by + (plus sign) and the word “affiliate”.  This will usually bring you lots of sites with affiliate programs within that niche.

When should I apply to affiliate programs?

Once you have 10 – 12 pages/posts on your site. New website owners are often eager to get their affiliate programs in place before they even start building their sites. Many times they are rejected and become discouraged. Some companies will want to see that you are serious about building a site before they are willing to accept you into their affiliate program.

Why was I turned down on my affiliate application?

There are a number of reasons why affiliate manages reject your application the first time around. I cover a few of them here.

Where do I find content for my site?

It would be wonderful if there was a place to simply find content, but the fact is, YOU need to create that content. If this is difficult for you, try looking at the top ten sites within your niche. You can get some great ideas to work with.

Can I use PLR?

I do NOT recommend using PLR material for your website. They are usually low quality articles and because they are so popular, you run the risk of duplicate content. Google will penalize your site and you definitely don’t want that!

$5 for 1,000,000 visitors?

OK, maybe not a million, but there are many offers out there that promise tons of traffic to your site for $5. My advise, don’t do it! Most of these visits will be from bots who don’t buy anything. The visits will be for very short periods of time and your bounce rate will be very high.

Sudden surges in traffic like this looks suspicious to search engines and these kind of schemes will hurt your rankings at best. It could even lead to your site being blacklisted which would suck!

How do I get more traffic to my site?

The best way to increase traffic to your site is to add more keyword focused content.

What about article spinners?

Article spinners typically go out and find existing articles from other sites and tries to make them unique. One thing they do is to rearrange the paragraphs. Another thing do is replace certain words with synonyms.

I personally don’t recommend using these things. The quality of the content is usually not very good. You will have to spend too much time re-writing them to make good articles. You’re better off writing your own articles from the start.

Should I buy Facebook Likes?

No. They will not be real likes nor will they lead to any engagement or sales. You are better off paying for Facebook ads if you really want to go that way.

How can I tell if my site is ranking?

I have posted a detailed article on this subject. Are you REALLY on the first page of Google?

How can I improve my Alexa ranking?

Many people are obsessed with their Alexa ranking. The thing you need to understand about Alexa is that only people who have the Alexa toolbar installed on their computers are counted in the Alexa ranking system. It is basically useless information! The only rankings you NEED to worry about are Google rankings.

How much content do I need on my website to get ranked by Google?

Many internet marketing experts agree that your articles need to be a minimum of 400 to 500 words. I tend to agree and I will rarely write articles with less than 800 words. However, this is due to the nature of the kind of sites I build. If you are building a site with lots of different products, a 150 word product description will usually suffice. If you are using video’s with keyword focused titles, those can rank well with almost NO content!

How much do websites cost?

This depends on several factors:

A premium domain name is around $12 per year.

Hosting is around $10 per month

Other costs can vary widely if you decide to invest in affiliate marketing training.

How many affiliate programs can you sign up for?

There are no limits to the number of affiliate programs you can sign up for however, some companies have no-compete clauses and will terminate your affiliation if you are caught promoting their competitors products as well. Always read through the affiliate agreements no mater how daunting that can be.

Steve I just discovered your site and I’m really impressed with the quality of your content. I’ve been studying affiliate marketing for quite some time and your FAQs are some of the best I’ve ever seen. I learned a lot! I agree with your assessment of Wealthy Affiliate. They are the very place to go if you want to get a serious affiliate marketing education.

    • Steve

Thank you so much Patti. That means a lot to me coming from someone who does such great work as yourself. I’m looking forward to more stories on your site. They are a HOOT!

    • Steve

That’s a great one Carla! I can’t believe I didn’t think of that one yet. That’s one of the more popular affiliate marketing faq’s.

  2. Damien Parsons

They Steve. I have been following your website, and love what you are putting together.

A helpful addition to your FAQ’s:

    How much do websites cost?
How many affiliates can you sign up for?

    Hi Steve,
Great review of Affiliate Marketing FAQ’s. You cleared up some confusion for me. One question though, what is the income potential that you have seen from successful affiliate marketing campaigns.

It might be an impossible question to answer. Just thought I’d get your take on the subject.

    • Steve

Thanks for the question Todd. The key word in your question is “potential” and it really is almost impossible to answer. I would recommend going to Youtube and look for the video with Tony Robbins, Frank Kern and John Reese. John mentions the email marketing campaign where he was the first internet marketer to have a $1,000,000 dollar day!

    Hey Steve,

What a great idea for an article! I like the way you answer all questions with honest marketing methods.

People that buy traffic & links and use things like article spinners are asking for trouble.

Steering people towards writing quality original content is the best advice anyone could give.

Reading your questions and answers reinforces me that I’m on the right track. Even the mentally preparing yourself for six months to a year for results tells me I’m right on.

I got started June 21st and wouldn’t expects to have a sale under my belt until at least 6 months.

Building an online business take work, but I’m having a lot of fun doing it too, and learning a lot of great stuff.

    Thanks for the great article!

An e-book is a good way to get people to subscribe to an email list. It’s very easy to embed affiliate links into an e-book which could lead to future sales or future traffic.
From what I can tell, SFI is a network marketing business disguised as an affiliate marketing business. You can get in for free but in order to start earning money, you need to spend money and recruit others to do the same. If people find that they can become successful with this business great, I don’t care for MLM’s and I don’t personally recommend them.

  5. Your site is amazing! There is so much information but it is broken down and easy to understand. I had questions but every one of them was answered. You are doing a great job!

  6. Hi Steve, I was “affiliate program shopping” the entire day and came across this very frustrating issue. My site is few months old and I am not getting as much traffic as I hope too, yet.

So when I want to apply for an affiliate program (relevant to my niche) and get turned down for not “having enough traffic” – I am dumbfounded. In order to get traffic, I need something that sells. But if you can give me something to sell, I can’t get the traffic.

So how do I go about this matter?
